Ari Joshua releases new single “Blurry Face,” his fifth release of the year. Previous releases include “Saturday Night Live Sessions” and “Voodoo Chile.”
Music Factory Records is proud to announce the release of “Blurry Face,” a captivating new trio track from Ari Joshua featuring John Medeski (organ, clavinet) and Billy Martin (drums), legendary members of the groundbreaking jazz-improvisation group Medeski Martin & Wood. Recorded live in a single take at Applehead Studios, the performance captures the urgency, risk, and connection that define great improvised music.
Billy Martin, known for his deep groove sensibility and polyrhythmic mastery, has long bridged the worlds of jazz, funk, and experimental percussion. His extensive career includes work with the Lounge Lizards, teaching at the Drummers Collective, and decades of redefining the role of drums in improvised music. His hypnotic loop—first heard on “Loops from the Underground”—serves as the foundation for the track. John Medeski, a graduate of the New England Conservatory and veteran of bands like Dewey Redman, Jaco Pastorius, and John Scofield, brings his distinctive keyboard voice to the session. His clavinet vibrates with a joyful graininess, while his organ swells shimmer with psychedelic warmth and modal depth. At the center of it all is Ari Joshua, a versatile guitarist and composer whose background in jazz, psych rock, and avant-garde music informs his distinctive voice. On “Blurry Face,” his guitar tone is unapologetically strong—equal parts fuzz and finesse—interacting with the rhythm section in a conversation rooted in mutual respect and exploratory spirit.
“Blurry Face” arrives with a phenomenal jazz sound, with a nuance that brings hip-hop and funk together in an infectious groove that easily creates a pleasant atmosphere. It's the perfect song for a laid-back night, with a light soundtrack that relaxes and still brings a lot of elegance, creating an electrifying atmosphere, with the intensity needed to make a special moment.
"Blurry Face" shows the trio's class, with disconcerting riffs by Ari Joshua, bringing the more rock side of this trio that has the necessary vibration for this. Billy Martin excites the listeners with his strong and powerful beats, creating a rhythm and harmony that is vibrant. John Medeski is brilliant with his keyboard, bringing more elegance to the song.
This is the FIRST release to be released through the label's NEW website, which is under development. As part of the launch, Music Factory Records is offering, for a limited time, a play-along track, which fans can download and play along for feedback.
